The Calendar Culture

All my life i have never been used to seeking appointments, I would just walk across and knock on the door, get the work done. This is how it has been all my life until something happened in the only happening place of my life that office is. Oh yea! I moved teams. New team no doubt brings new things to our life. And since i am the pessimist, let me help you take a look at what is wrong here. This time the new thing i have got is the calendar culture.

Ah well, what exactly is calendar culture, that’s nothing but blocking your calendar for everything that can even be blocking your calendar so that you can use the time to block others' calendar. So My calendar is blocked for Team Meeting, Team lunch, Team Break, Metrics Review Meeting, Metrics Review Meeting, Discussion Meeting, Cascade Meeting, Please all of you Stand up meeting, All of you sit down Meeting and blah bla meeting and what not meeting, Not what meeting, Sundry and all meeting, I should Write this piece meeting, and so on and So forth meeting..

When you have lived like you have lived for 27 full years, its tough that you change. Yea, I didn’t change, continued to knock on the doors of the people trying to get the work done. But alas, it did not work at all times. In my native language, they say- "Laatho ke Bhut, haatho se nahi maante". Meaning one does not understand the language other than the language he understands. So I had to block calendars to get my work done. Alas I was still not getting my work done making me wonder what I was missing here. So i had to go back to where this culture started and plough at what possibly would be reasons for my failure.

So I opened up the calendars of these people and i would see that the calendars are so over-filled with one or the other meeting. Next i look at their desks to check if they actually take part in all those meetings. In spite of the calendars showing a big list of scheduled plans, some people are still at desk. That’s when I realized not to trust the big blue bars on the calendar that informed me that they are busy because of meeting. Busy is not always equal to busy or meeting does not really prove that he or she is in a meeting. The same logic applies to whoever whichever whatever crossing your mind right now. (I hope you are not thinking about the writer now).

I don’t know who invented this calendar culture, but the crux is to ‘block your time to get my work done’. As I said before, this did not work and resulted in failure. Leave aside the fact that I fail in whatever I do, I had to find a way to get the act done. Man is like rocket. Until you give him pressure, he is going to sit like a saint. Going back to my roots was the best option – “Knock the door”.

I set these rules for myself - Disturb people and keep disturbing them till your work is done. To remember that work is more important than work etiquette.   Lastly the key, “follow the calendar culture, but don’t rely on it”.
